Training

Training at Adelaide Koryu Kenkyukai

What to Expect

Training in koryu is unlike training in most modern martial arts. There is no competition, and our practice consists primarily of prearranged forms (kata) rather than sparring.

Progress is gradual and cumulative. The early stages of training are concerned with developing basic technical competence: correct posture, movement, grip, and timing. As these become established, students progress through the kata and develop the specific skills and attributes associated with the ryū. This process cannot be rushed, and it does not have an endpoint.

You will need to purchase appropriate training weapons and, in time, a keikogi. Costs are modest and guidance on equipment will be provided when you join. A small fee is charged to cover the cost of the training venue.

Joining Us

We accept new members on a case-by-case basis. We do not require prior martial arts experience, but we do require a genuine interest in classical Japanese martial arts and a willingness to commit to regular practice.

If you are interested in training, we ask that you contact us in the first instance using the form on the Contact page. Please tell us a little about yourself and what has drawn you to koryu. We will normally invite you to observe in the first instance so that you can get a sense of what each of our traditions are like and what training entails.

We are a small group and intend to remain so. This means we are selective, but it also means that those who do join receive close, attentive instruction within a focused and committed training environment.

Schedule

We train on Saturdays in Fullarton. The address is provided to prospective members upon enquiry.
