Adelaide Koryu Kenkyukai
Traditional Japanese martial arts in Adelaide, South Australia
The Arts
Adelaide Koryu Kenkyukai is a small, dedicated group practising three classical Japanese martial arts (koryu bujutsu) in Adelaide, South Australia. We have been training together for more than a decade, maintaining the forms, principles, and ethos of traditions that reach back centuries in Japan and our aim is to preserve and transmit these arts faithfully. If you are drawn to the depth and rigour of classical Japanese martial culture, we would be glad to hear from you.
Shindō Musō-ryū
Founded in the early seventeenth century, Shindō Musō-ryū teaches the use of the jo, a short staff approximately 128cm in length. Alongside this are taught the fuzoku ryūha (assimilated schools) which focus on the sword, kusarigama, tanjō and jutte.
Tatsumi-ryū
Tatsumi-ryū traces its lineage to the early sixteenth century. The main focus of the tradition is the use of the Japanese sword (tachi), but Tatsumi-ryū also includes spearmanship (sōjutsu) and grappling (yawara) as well as instruction in the use of the bō, hanbō, naginata, and various other weapons.
Tenshin Bukō-ryū
Having its origins in the mid-sixteenth century, Tenshin Bukō-ryū maintains a curriculum centred on the naginata. Central to the school is the kagitsuki naginata, a naginata with a cross-bar. Other weapons include the nagamaki, spear, kusarigama and bō.
